The Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Refuge in Heaven

In case you didn’t catch Fr. Gregory Pine, O.P.’s, talks at the Dominican Rosary Pilgrimage a few weeks back, here’s the first talk he gave that day. Or if you did catch it, listen again. There is so much to unpack here!

In his first of two talks that day, Fr. Gregory spoke about Catholic devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and he posed three questions. Is devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary overkill? Is it idolatrous? Does it upend the centrality of Christ? The answer to all three questions is NO.

Honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary isn’t overkill, rather it’s overflow! We don’t worship Mary in the way we worship God, but we do honor her. We venerate Mary because God is wonderful in his saints. And this is truest in Our Lady, the saint most conformed to her Son.

An idol? No, an icon! Idols lead people away from God. But like a good icon, the Blessed Virgin Mary leads souls to God—and she disappears, allowing God to pass through her.

Upending the place of Christ? Not upending, extending! Our Lady doesn’t upend the centrality of Christ in our lives. Rather, she extends it to us—with the care of a mother!
